FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a root canal? A root canal is one of the most common dental procedures performed and involves the removal of diseased pulp followed by the thorough cleaning and sealing of the root canal system. This simple treatment can save your natural teeth and prevent the need for costly dental implants or bridges.

Will treatment be painful? We will take every measure to ensure that your procedure is in no way uncomfortable or painful. If treatment is needed, we will inject a small amount of anesthesia to gently numb a concentrated area of your mouth. For most patients, the feeling of numbness usually subsides after 2-3 hours.

Do I need to discontinue my regular medications prior to treatment? Continue all medications for blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid problems and any other conditions as recommended by your physician. If there is a question, please call our office prior to your appointment.

Will I be in pain after treatment? Your tooth and surrounding gum tissue may be tender for several days as a result of manipulation during treatment and/or because of the previous condition of your tooth. Tenderness is normal and will usually resolve in about a week. Dr. Munley may prescribe pain medication following treatment.

What should I do if the pain does not subside or if I experience swelling? Should you experience discomfort that cannot be controlled with prescribed medication, or should swelling develop, please contact our office immediately. The office telephone is answered day and night. If you need to call after hours, please have your pharmacy number available.

Is there anything I need to do following treatment? Yes. Even though treatment has been completed and the root canal system sealed, the outer surface has been sealed with a temporary restoration. You must now contact your restorative dentist to schedule a permanent restoration to protect your tooth against fracture and decay. Having a permanent filling placed soon after the root canal is completed is extremely important as the temporary restoration will leak over an extended period of time. Please contact your dentist no later than two weeks after treatment at our office.

Can I chew on the treated area? Do not chew food on the affected side until your tooth is covered with a permanent protective restoration provided by your restorative dentist.

Will I need to return to your office for follow-up after the procedure is finished? Yes, for most root canal treatments, we recommend that patients return to the office 6 months after the procedure was finished to evaluate for healing. If you have questions or concerns about your tooth prior to the six month check-up you can call our office or schedule a follow-up visit at any time.
